Framer Marketplace is an arena that can earn a lot of money for you. The top creators admit that they earn $10,000+ monthly. Two years ago, I launched a few Framer templates, and in those early days, one single template earned me more than $3,000 (not counting All Access Plan Members or Framer Partner Program referrals).
This year, I decided to jump into Framer again and explore new opportunities that have risen recently. I built a premium template for designers and creative professionals and submitted it to the Official Marketplace. After a few reviews, the template made it and is available now in the Framer Marketplace.
With this article, I share tips based on my experience with preparing a quality template and the recent review process. Thanks to this, you will be able to jump into the Framer Marketplace with higher confidence and much faster.
Let’s dive in!
An important thing I observed is that due to the large number of templates already available in the store, getting there is much harder than it used to be. Many talented designers joined the Framer community, and the marketplace is much more saturated. Reviewers inspect your template carefully, and even designers producing templates on a mass scale usually do not land in the Marketplace on their first try (Omar Elabd mentioned that last year he submitted 26 templates, and only 2 went live after the first revision).
Having this attitude in mind upfront will make you much less stressed and more patient. Once you have it, let’s move into the detailed work you need to do with your future template.
Below you will find the first five tips that you should follow in the process of designing your Framer template.
Make sure you have read the Framer Guidelines before you start building a template. It may sound obvious, but it is worth repeating over and over—without compliance with the requirements, you will most probably get rejected instantly.
Read them, remember them, and apply them to your template. You most likely will not be able to remember all the details at the start, but this point of reference will be your ally in the process. Go back to the requirements often when you think of creating a new component, original section, or effect.
Also, when Framer introduces a new feature, check if this will become a new point in the guidelines.
I recommend you instantly bookmark the Official Framer Template Requirements.
You may be an excellent web designer, and your template may look top-notch, but if your user does not know how to customize it, you failed.
Prepare your site in a way that will be easy to customize. Organize CMS items and variables so that they are intuitive and self-descriptive. Sometimes it is better to avoid complex structures or interactions to make customization easier.
Your template may be purchased by someone who does not know Framer at all, so to avoid frustrations, provide links to basic training where they can learn how to adjust the content to their needs.
Having the attitude of building a product that will be used by others is important when designing your template. It will help you get satisfied clients, and in some cases, reviewers may ask you to provide extra guidelines.
Once you complete the template, try to wear the hat of the reviewer. It is hard to go beyond your cognitive bias, but at least try to have a fresh perspective on what may cause some problems. Review the Framer Template Guidelines again.
Do not forget to fill in basic meta information before the upload. Go to Site Settings and briefly fill out the entire General section. For the site preview, choose the free Framer domain with one word from your template name—this will be the link your future customers use to preview the site before purchase.
Performance is very important when it comes to site SEO. There are many tools to evaluate it. Personally, I recommend using Google PageSpeed Insights. It is a free tool. Results are clearly displayed, divided into multiple categories, and provide actionable suggestions to improve your website.
Aim for 100% in Accessibility, SEO, and Best Practices. For Performance, make sure your site stays in the green area.
To make the site land in the Framer Marketplace, you need to prepare a few more additional assets.
Check the latest requirements by going into Creator Mode after signing into Framer.com. Current list of required assets & infomration:
Take your time to enter all values carefully.
If you do not know what to enter, search for some of the best templates in your category and analyze them. You will notice patterns you can draw inspiration from.
Once you have submitted the template, you need to stay patient. Since hundreds of designers are submitting their creations all the time, reviewers are overloaded with submissions.
Sure, you may see that some super popular Framer creators submit their pages and are live after two days, but for the majority of designers, this process will take longer.
In my case, I waited around seven days for the first revision.
As I mentioned in the first paragraph, most likely your template will not pass the first review, and that is fine.
If you receive general feedback that your template has multiple issues, go back to the first points I listed and check what is wrong.
Once you receive an email with a list of things to improve, that is a good sign. Framer Template reviewers are very helpful and kind. Go through the points and apply necessary changes where possible. If something is unclear, do not hesitate to ask for a bit more detailed guidance.
If you feel that a reviewer questioned something you did intentionally (and it complies with all Framer requirements), feel free to discuss the topic further. If you have an example of another template already present in the Marketplace, show it and ask how to make your component, variant, or section compliant. I am sure you will figure it out together with the reviewer.
Once you complete making changes, send an email to the reviewer to let them know that they can proceed with further steps.
Sometimes new elements that require changes appear in the next steps of the review. It is an iterative process. Do not lose motivation. It may take three to four review cycles to catch everything that needs to be uplifted. Simply do your work patiently—the reviewer is your ally to make sure the final result will be high quality.
Congrats! Your template has landed in the Framer Marketplace. Now it is time to celebrate. So what do you do when you celebrate in real life? Yes—invite others.
Spread the news across your channels and social media. You may prepare a giveaway or a discount for the first 24 hours to encourage people to check your template (recently, I have seen many of them, maybe even too many). The reason for this is that a fresh template downloaded many times in the first days will land higher in the trending category, which will certainly make even more users discover it.
So, why is everyone so excited about getting into the Official Marketplace? First, it is a sign of quality and trust—if Framer showcases your work, it must be good quality. Second, user base—everyone interested in having a Framer website will explore the official store. You do not need extra audience building—it is already there. It sounds like a good starting point for designers thinking of having an additional income stream.
However, there are more opportunities besides the official Marketplace. New unofficial Framer stores have appeared and some have gained attention—the most popular ones are Framer Things and Superb Themes. Good old stores like UI8 or Creative Market also offer the possibility to sell Framer templates (but in some cases, you need to align with additional requirements, like including the Figma design of your website).
Finally, what I would recommend setting as an ultimate goal is to think about building your own audience, your own store, and a mailing list where you can interact with your customers. This will make you a bit independent of changes or algorithm fluctuations, resulting in a more stable business.
I am saying this from my experience—when I am writing this email, my mailing list includes around 10,000 wonderful creative people. Within a few hours after a template launch in the Marketplace, it was already downloaded dozens of times (I am also inviting you to join my newsletter to get more tips like this).
The above tips will give you better preparation and attitude for submitting and going through the review process of the Framer Marketplace. As you can see, it is important to have a clear goal at each stage of the journey—from template creation, submission, review, to launch. I keep my fingers crossed for your Framer adventure!
If you have more or alternative tips, feel free to share them so we can build an even more comprehensive source to make Framer template creators more confident and successful.
